Academic Games Success!
Recently, students competed in the World Events competition for Academic Games. The competition took place at Ambridge High School against many other Beaver County schools. Students are given very broad categories, and have to spend a great deal of time studying in preparation for the event.  Our results were fantastic!  In the elementary division, Lilly Shychuck received the highest overall score!  In the middle division, Sophia Velto received the highest overall score!  Never have we had two students win their division in the same competition!  Also qualifying with high scores were Ashley Chiccarello, Melissa Halstead and Ben Foringer in the high school division.  Other participating students were Jon Sadenwasser, Landon Allison, Emma Shychuck, Kristen Spencer, Reagan Halstead and Emily Martin.  Congrats to all these students, and great thanks to our Academic Games Sponsors, Mr. Sam McCoy and Mr. Chris Ochtun, for all their efforts in preparing these students for success!
District 5 High School Choir
On January 21st-23rd, Megan Pieto, Alexandra Adams and Megan Bothell all had the honor of rehearsing and performing with this year’s 2015 District 5 Choir under the direction of Dr. Christopher Kiver, director of numerous Penn State University Choirs.  Congratulations to all three of these students on their achievements and beautiful performance!

In addition to this achievement, both Alex and Megan auditioned and were ranked within the top 6 chairs for their voice parts, thus earning them each a place at the Region Choir Festival which will take place at the end of February.  From there, they will again audition in the hopes of advancing to our 2015 Pennsylvania All- State Choir.  Bravo on an outstanding achievement, and we wish you luck as you prepare for the next performance and audition!
Wonderful Writing!
Congratulations to the following students, who have been awarded for their writing by the Scholastic Arts and Writing Competition (SAWC)!  Since our district does not belong to a specific SAWC region, our student work is sent to New York City to compete in a much larger pool of work.  To be awarded at this "region-at-large" level is really a wonderful accomplishment.  Award winners include:  Emily Anglemyer, SILVER KEY, Personal Essay/Memoir, Beautiful Mess; Kate Bangley, GOLD KEY, Personal Essay/Memoir, Weaboo; Ainsley Berringer, HONORABLE MENTION, Writing Portfolio, Happenstance; Ainsley Berringer, HONORABLE MENTION, Personal Essay/Memoir, The Summit; Ainsley Berringer, SILVER KEY, Poetry, Whirlwind; Ainsley Berringer, HONORABLE MENTION, Short Story, Original Sin; Sarah Cain, HONORABLE MENTION, Humor, Cheese Fries and Grease Paint; Garrett Cilli; HONORABLE MENTION, Critical Essay, On the Installment of the Supreme Court Justices; Melissa Halstead, HONORABLE MENTION, Humor, Welcome to the Jungle; Megan Pieto, HONORABLE MENTION, Poetry, /aNG(k)st/; Jordan Everly, GOLD KEY, Personal Essay/Memoir, The Worst for the Better.  Jordan and Kate will have their work move on to the National judging.  Silver and Gold Key recipients at that level are invited to Carnegie Hall in New York for their awards.  Way to go!
Dustin Lander Receives Baseball Scholarship
South Side senior baseball player, Dustin Lander, recently signed his National Letter of Intent to play Division 1 Baseball at Charleston Southern University located in Charleston, South Carolina.  Dustin had an outstanding junior year as he helped lead the Rams to the playoffs and was named the W.P.I.A.L "AA" Pitcher of the year.  Dustin was a perfect 8-0 on the mound and one of his victories was a no-hitter against Shady Side Academy in the first round of the W.P.I.A.L. Class AA playoffs. He had 78 strikeouts and also hit around .400 from his leadoff position.  Congratulations Dustin and good luck this spring and at Charleston Southern!
School Delay or Cancellation
The South Side Area School District takes many factors into account before delaying or cancelling school.  Factors such as visibility, traction, temperature, wind chill and timing of a storm are often considered.  In the event of a school delay or closing, parents will receive a phone call from the One Call Now system.  Delay and cancellation information will also be posted on our district website as well as on local media sources.  (WPXI, KDKA, WTAE, Froggy Radio, WBVP)  Ultimately the safety of our students and staff is at the core of all weather related decisions.   A special thank you to South Side Garage and our townships who assist in promoting safety for all.

The community is welcome to utilize the district campus and track area until 10:00pm each evening; however, please be advised that from November 2nd through February 28th, the campus will be closed in the evenings due to potential inclement weather.  Thank you.
