US Army War College Assembly

In collaboration with the United States Army War College, South Side High School hosted a panel discussion recently on Global Strategies and U.S. National Security. Senior officers representing the United States military briefed students and fielded questions on various national security issues and discussed how the U.S. is addressing these concerns. Students and faculty from other local area districts such as Hopewell, Western Beaver, Rochester, and Central Valley were also in attendance. What an incredible opportunity for these students to gain such valuable real-world insight on such important global issues!
The Mobile Dentist is coming to South Side

Anti-Bullying Program
On February 5th, the South Side Education Association is sponsoring “The Josh and Gab Anti Bullying Program.”   Josh and Gab are local comedians who perform an “unforgettable high-energy musical-comedy” with a “focus on an anti-bullying message.”  They will perform three shows for each of the buildings during the day.

Here is a bit more form the Josh and Gab website:

“The team has been featured on PBS and CBS television for their efforts, received both "40 Under 40" and "Best In The Burgh" awards from Pittsburgh Magazine, gained airplay on WXPN and WYEP radio, and have directly engaged over 100,000 elementary and middle-school students in the course of their travels. Josh and Gab are now the stars of their own television show, The Josh and Gab Show, presented by the Marcus L. Ruscitto Charitable Foundation, and look forward to visiting a school or community location near you in 2015!”

Academic Award
Congratulations to Mrs. Stockdale, winner of a $2,500 Academic Award from California Casualty Insurance Company!  National surveys find educators spend an average of $500 each year of their own funds to prepare their classrooms, with many spending much more. Recognizing the effect of tight school budgets, the California Casualty Academic Award was created in 2012 to help instructors purchase classroom supplies, materials and fund projects.  Mrs. Stockdale applied for the award several months ago, but was unsure of the outcome until she was presented with a big giant check at the faculty meeting – what a nice surprise!
Cast and crew are hard at work on this year’s musical production --- The Wizard of Oz!  Show dates are Feb 25, 26, 27th at 7:00pm and Feb 28th at 2:00pm.  Tickets will be available soon; $6 for students and seniors and $8 for general attendance.  Save the date!
Track closure for winter
The community is welcome to utilize the district campus and track area until 10:00 pm each evening; however, please be advised that from November 2 – February 29 the campus will be closed in the evenings due to potential inclement weather.

Laptop Insurance is now available
Students in grades 6-12 can now purchase insurance for their laptop that will allow them to take the device home.  This is the second year that the district has partnered with the Worth Ave Group to add coverage to the devices if parents decide to do so.  Please note, this is optional and is only required if students would like to have the ability to take the device home.  The cost to fully insure the device is $62 and checks are made payable to the South Side Area School District.  Students and parents are required to sign off on the District-Owned Devices handbook which is available in the MS/HS office prior to insurance being offered.  If you have any questions about the insurance coverage or process, please contact Mike Lewis, Assistant Superintendent at 724-573-9581, ext. 2612.  Thank you.
